EL GUINARDÓ

“IN EL GUINARDÓ THE LIGHT IS DIFFERENT
AND THE AIR IS FRESHER”

Situated on the upper slopes of Barcelona, cradled by the Collserola hills and once blanketed in orchards and fields, the residential district of El Guinardó offers a relaxed, authentic lifestyle that feels pleasantly detached from the center of town.

Rural parks and leafy, slightly hilly streets characterize this part of the city, along with views that sweep over the spires of the landmark Sagrada Familia to the Mediterranean Sea. Shops, restaurants and other services such as schools and libraries cater to locals, not tourists, and Barcelona’s business and commercial districts are easy to reach on bus or metro.

OTHER INTERESTS

The elevated situation of the El Guinardó districts means that sweeping views of Barcelona are in constant eyesight. Los Bunkers de Carmel, or the remains of an old air-raid shelter, is a popular destination with locals to watch the sun set over the Mediterranean.

Gaudí’s masterpiece, and symbol of Barcelona, La Sagrada Familia can be seen from many viewpoints in El Guinardó; far enough away to not be bothered by tourists, but close enough to appreciate its ambitious architecture.

Peace and tranquility is palpable in El Guinardó. Shops, markets and services cater to locals, not tourists, and the neighborhood’s verdant character make it ideal for outdoor and family-friendly activities. For nightlife, and eclectic restaurants and shopping, the trendy district of Gràcia lies a short distance away.

Hospital San Pau

Built in the style of Modernisme, Barcelona’s singular architectural language, the Hospital San Pau is a breathtaking landmark in the El Guinardó neighborhood. It’s now a cultural center, but a new, modern, public hospital has been built on the same grounds.

The neighborhoods north of Barcelona’s city center are characterized by Mediterranean parks and gardens. The Parc del Guinardó is one of the city’s largest, and popular for running, walking or just taking in some pine-scented air against a backdrop of sweeping city views.

Holmes Place Sardenya

Directly in front of Praga 22-24, this charming landscaped park leads down, via a series of terraces, to the local Metro stop. It was once the estate of the president of the city’s water company and had two important water sources. These days it’s place for local families to gather and has a small playground.
